The whole is a part and the part is a whole. The 100-word format forces the writer to question each word, to reckon with Gustave Flaubert’s mot juste in a way that even most flash fiction doesn’t. At the same time, the brevity of the form allows...
Based on the former USAF Greenham Common cruise missile base, this 20,000sqft warehouse space with on-site fabrication, accommodation and rehearsal facilities is the UK’s major centre for artistic residencies, creation of new work for public spaces and innovation in site-specific and outdoor performance. They host a year-round programme of artistic residencies for companies and individuals making work for the outdoors and public places. Their resident artists and companies come from a wide range of arts, theatre and performance disciplines. A residency can explore any stage of the development of ideas, from the early stages of research and development, to making or producing a piece of work. 101 offers free use of its available spaces to artists during residences. It offers accommodation in a number of refurbished vintage caravans on-site. They can also offer aspects of technical support and equipment within theirr existing resources. 101 is a hub for information and advice and they are always very willing to share contacts, skills and experience with artists. The space is flexible but it can get cold in winter. 101 offers residency opportunities to selected professional companies producing high quality outdoor arts work. There is no formal application process – the programme is curated and the choice of companies reflects the organisations' interests and the range of work they seek to develop. You can write to them with a proposal or contact them for an informal discussion. Due to significant initial interest they anticipate the number of artists seeking residencies to far exceed the space available in the calendar.

'2angles', an association founded in 1999, promotes visual arts and contemporary dance in the region. In 2010, 2angles joined the network of cultural centres supported by the Normandy region. One of its main missions is to receive artists and dance companies through its residencies programme. These residencies result in exhibitions of the work of visual artists and public presentations of the work-in-progress where dance companies are concerned. The activities of ‘2angles’ mostly take place in the town centre of Flers. Located in what was once a dye factory, the association disposes of 400m2 in which to house its three exhibition spaces, workshops, offices and a library. In addition, ‘2angles’ has access to a stage and a rehearsal studio which are made available by the town of Flers. '2angles' is the place to be if you are interested in discovering, creating, experimenting, researching and sharing. It creates bridges between visual arts and dance, the artists, the public, and local enterprise. The association named 'Le RAVE (Reseau des Arts Vivants Electriques -a contemporary music network)’ is located in the same building. The proximity between the two associations creates regular collaborations. Here, artists, sculptors, choreographers, painters, dancers, musicians and managers frequently meet. The team of '2angles' also develops projects with local partners such as schools, hospitals, prisons, associations or other cultural centres. The chosen residency guests will be able to concentrate on their work, create new opportunities and discuss/present their work and experiences from their second-generation perspective, all according to the submitted work plan. Your proposed work plan should thematically be connected to second-generation immigration. Applications are welcomed from cultural practitioners from any discipline; they are prepared to find suitable means of co-operation and facilities as the submitted work plans seem to warrant. The residency is a part of the Oulu2026 European Culture Capital year.

Located in the exceptional heritage and unspoilt setting of the Montperrin Psychiatric Hospital dating back to the 19th century, 3 bis f is a place for multidisciplinary contemporary creation which is led by two artistic directors, one for visual arts and the other for performing arts. Approximately 20 French and international artists are invited to participate in residency programmes run by 3 bis f each season for varying periods of time, from a few weeks for live performance to several months for visual arts. Artists have been using 3 bis f as a workspace since its creation in 1983, reflecting the unusual identity of the centre which situates their practices in a different context. This environment is conducive to experimentation and the mixing of artistic disciplines and practices. Residents pursue their creative work with an openness to fellow artists, our team, as well as members of the public who may or may not be patients of the hospital. During their residency, artists benefit from the support of the 3 bis f team which is present on site. The residency programme and exhibition constitute the production of new works, as well as a milestone in the artist’s career. The creative project carried out by the artist marks a turning point or a period during which risks are taken in his or her practice. Moreover, the residency period is an opportunity for artists to meet and interact with those around them. Keen that the duration of the programme correspond as much as possible to the act of creation, the centre identifies (imagines), together with the artist, a fertile ground for sharing, encounters, exchanges and practices that are capable of nurturing the artist’s approach.
